meet mr. fitzgerald, the bouncing baby boy born to our wonderful friends./ (we tested the “bouncing,” which i don’t recommend.)
soon before birth, his name still was not founded./ but at his shower, suggestions abounded:
“f. scott,” “ehudil,” i think “ella,” too./ “gerald” and “maximus.” after the dog, “banjo II.”/ i favored “thisdiaperwontfitmebutit.” nothing would do./ (if you don’t get that yet, just let it stew.)/ the crazy part is — all these suggestions — they’re true!
still no name for the little man coming./ but in his parents’ hearts, a new name was drumming.
“asher, ‘our blessing,'” they cried when he came./ “our answer to prayer. a most splendid name!
“we used to think you might never be here./ when you finally came near, we started to fear.
“the doctors thought you might arrive sick./ but now that you’re with us, you’re not sick a lick!
“no matter what happens, whatever may pass/ you’re our sweetest blessing. sent from God! here at last!”
so asher was loved like no child before,/ with a name like a glove, and a family he adored.
(and he was especially fond of his uncle phillip and aunt eileen.) 😉
