THE BLOG

mary claire is graduating!

i wish you could see eileen and me on a day like today — in the studio, eyes turning square from staring at monitors for hours on end, trading baby jasmine back and forth for turns on mom’s and dad’s laps, flexing our gluteus maximi (is that the correct plural??) so as not to become too flabby fat and lazy. not the most glamorous part of the job. but we do our best to keep it fun. the mellow tunes of jack johnson, courtesy of pandora, are floating from the ipod dock. tea is brewing on the stove. except for the occasional episode of stinky gas and crying (baby jas, not me), it’s really quite pleasant. i lean over to eileen for her professional opinion: “what do you think of this one for the blog? i like the way she’s blowing the flies away — looks like magic dust.”

“yeah, i like it!” she responds. then five second later, both of us in unison and in high-pitched ghetto voices, like madea in a tyler perry movie, “MAGIC DUST!” The kind of random exclamation that, after a couple years of marriage, happens more often that you’d expect. wild laughter ensues until tears come. not the gassy tears. the other kind.

we’re not sure why we get to work together like this, doing something we love. but we’re thankful. especially thankful for the terrific subjects we get to work with between the endless days of photo editing. mary claire was certainly one of those terrific subjects. (how is it a high schooler can be so confident and work the camera this well? i’m still working on building that kinda confidence, and i’m… well, just old enough to forget my exact age.) her energy and outgoing nature really got us pumped for this shoot, and i know it will serve her well as she jumps out into the world after graduation. congrats, mary claire! you’ve got a lot to look forward to. maybe even long days of seated butt exercising and tea — if you’re lucky. 😉
