today, i am very happy to share with you a wedding that represents not only the union of two people, but the coming together of cultures as well. maybe it’s because of all the joy (and good hearty belly laughs) that eileen and i have experienced through the mixing of our own cultural backgrounds. but we believe that something very special happens when — for instance — the girl from the big, boisterous, embracing familia puertoriqueña meets the boy from the classic, cozy, calmer family americana. cristina and kevin’s new family together is bound to be warmer, more welcoming, and stronger as a result of all the goodness that’s been poured into their lives. (not to mention, their kids may actually inherit salsa skills!! lucky.)
over the course of one incredible day, eileen and i had the privilege of witnessing so many historic moments with these families. from cristina’s simultaneous completion of her hair, her makeup, and her taxes (all on schedule!), to kevin’s undistinguished poker hand (hope that wasn’t the tax money!), to the touching mother-son dance and the father-daughter salsa, the wedding cake baked by cristina’s mother, and other small but important details like the embroidered handkerchief cristina carried, her grandmother’s before her. seeing the support these two received from their families, many of whom had traveled so far to celebrate their love, was just plain ol’ good for the soul. our only regret: that we were unable to attend the day-after celebration cristina’s mother invited us to. o, how the promise of homemade paella and sangría hangs over my palate!
well, perhaps next time. hopefully this is not the last we’ll be seeing of these amazing people who made us feel like part of the big crazy family. muchísimas gracias por todo. y, ¡viva el amor!
