“augusta, georgia just ain’t no place to be” — unless it’s for a cool photo shoot!

question: what city, located on the savannah river, is georgia’s second largest in population? if you said savannah, you are incorrect — but good at making educated guesses. if you said chicago, you are also incorrect (and in desperate need of a geography lesson). as it turns out, the answer is augusta. the funny thing is, you probably wouldn’t guess it even if you visited. augusta seemed like a ghost town during our weekend visit. the downtown stayed all but deserted and the public parks sadly seemed to be falling into disrepair. nick explained to me that — other than the students at augusta’s large medical college (of which he is one!) — there really isn’t much “young blood” to invigorate the old industrial town. like the song says, “augusta, georgia just ain’t no place to be.” well, those lyrics may be a tidbit harsh. on a positive note,  augusta’s character-rich locations are great for photography! riverbanks covered in ballast stones, antique railroad bridges, abandoned cotton warehouses. you name it. we had our pick.

most of all, we had a terrific time exploring the old cotton town with susie and nick. then we retired to an excellent japanese restaurant just to shoot the breeze awhile. let me tell ya, if anyone can breathe a little life into a tired town, it’s these two. thanks for showin’ us a great time out, you guys. we’re getting even more excited for you as your wedding approaches (not to mention med school graduation. :P). see you soon!

These are beautiful! I am new to the Augusta area. Where were these pictures taken? I didn’t know we had anything that cool!

  4. phillipblume says:

Absolutely! The old train bridge and Cotton warehouses at the Riverside Park and visitors center. The city actually has done a lot of improvements to this area since this photo shoot, which was quite along time ago. Hope you find it and enjoy, Kelsey!
